The University of Maryland Baltimore (UMB) is seeking anAssistant Vice President, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion(AVP-EDI) in the Office of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion.The Office of EDI provides leadership, builds capacity, andcultivates collective action to advance sustainable, systemicchange that promotes equity and justice in all dimensions of themission and culture of UMB. The Assistant Vice President will be aninstitutional leader who works closely with the VicePresident/Chief EDI Officer (CEDIO) and senior leaders, inpartnership and collaboration with the UMB community, to fosterexcellence and equity at UMB. 

Reporting directly to the Vice President/Chief EDI Officer (CEDIO),the Assistant Vice President will have leadership responsibilityfor high-level university wide initiatives and direct key aspectsof institutional EDI accountability, strategic planning, leadershipdevelopment and capacity building, and faculty development anddiversity. The AVP will also represent the VP/CEDIO to UMBconstituents, including students, faculty, staff, senior leaders,system-wide constituents, and external partners.

Primary Duties:

  • Serve as an institutional expert, resource, and thought leaderon the contemporary and validated approaches to establishing aculture that values and integrates equity, diversity, and inclusionprinciples, practices, and policies.
  • Provide leadership and engage collaboratively with seniorleadership to adopt strategies that foster education, awareness,and actions that promote a more diverse, equitable, and inclusiveuniversity.
  • Represent the VP/CEDIO on university task forces, committees,working groups, and relevant system-wide and external committees,programs, and events.
  • Develop, administer, and assess programs, initiatives, andpolicies to enhance equity, diversity, and inclusion in facultyrecruitment, development, advancement, and retention.
  • Lead the development, implementation, and assessment ofhigh-impact EDI initiatives and programs to advance universityleadership development and capacity building.
  • Advise senior leadership regarding complex EDI issues andpriorities. Consult and advise on EDI strategic direction, process,accountability, and infrastructure for the University. Provideleadership and expertise to develop novel interventions to addressuniversity-wide EDI goals and priorities.
  • Provide direction on the design, development, andimplementation of a university-wide accountability framework thatpromotes and ensures excellence and equity across all dimensions ofthe mission and culture of UMB.
  • Undertake unique, sensitive, and high-profile projects. Craftwell-developed and practical solutions to a wide range of complexissues affecting the university. Lead various ad-hoc committees andworking groups to accomplish EDI goals and objectives.
  • Provide high-level expertise and advice to the Vice Presidenton the design, development, and delivery of EDI initiatives andprograms to advance the UMB Diversity Strategic Plan.
  • Lead, support, and advance grant writing opportunities thatstrengthen institutional inclusion, diversity, and equity, justice,and anti-racism initiatives and programs.

Qualifications :

Education: Masters required. Ed.D. or Ph.D. degree preferredin a relevant field such as Education, Management, Psychology, orother EDI-related field.

Experience: Ten (10) years of progressive leadershipexperience that demonstrates a thorough knowledge of equity,diversity, or inclusion principles and practices, organizationalculture and effectiveness, change management and/or leadershipdevelopment. Leadership, management, and administration ofEDI-related organizational experience in progressively responsiblepositions.

Experience: Five (5) years of supervisory/managementexperience.

Financial disclosure reporting required by State of MarylandEthics Commission.

Serves at the pleasure of the VP/CEDI.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Proven leadership, influencing, and negotiating skills in anacademic environment; ability to lead and integrate EDI in thecontext of broader University strategy and outcomes.
  • Advanced experience in the development and advancement ofhigh-impact initiatives in large, complex systems.
  • Expertise in curriculum and program design, training, anddevelopment to advance university-wide equity diversity andinclusion priorities and goals.
  • Advanced strategic thinking and consulting skills in guidingthe organization toward workable strategies and solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively represent and coordinateorganizational strategy and administrative initiatives with seniorleaders and multiple constituencies.
  • Demonstrated expertise in the design, development andadministration of programs, initiatives, and policies to enhancediverse faculty recruitment, development, advancement, andretention.
  • Experience in grant writing and securing grants related tostrengthening and advancing institutional equity, diversity,inclusion, justice, and anti-racism.
  • Demonstrated background to function at an executive levelwithin education and as such work independently and exercise soundjudgment when representing the Vice President.
  • Highly skilled in navigating and working effectively in acomplex, fluid environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively lead highly significantengagements and initiatives that impact multiple populations frominception to conclusion.
  • Demonstrated ability in providing leadership in committees andwork groups to develop and advance university EDI.
  • Demonstrated leadership, communication, team building, staffbuilding, and organizational skills within a complex and diverseorganization.
  • Proven ability to handle highly sensitive and confidentialissues that require independent judgment, strict discretion, andconfidentiality.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well asstrong interpersonal and relationship-building skills that areexhibited through the ability to prioritize, negotiate, and workwith a variety of internal and external stakeholders. Ability toconvey a collaborative, solutions-oriented style that can help leadchange using strong communication skills to convey the benefits ofproposed EDI initiatives.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of principles and methods for curriculumand training design for individuals and groups, and the assessmentof training.
  • Ability to develop, execute, and communicate EDI principles,practices, models and provide insightful analysis, performancemeasures, and metrics.
