“I do not try to dance better than anyone else. I only try to dance better than myself.” -Unknown
If you are a dancer, you know how slippery a stage or dance studio floor can be. While it might be a little while longer until we can perform on stage together again, here are some helpful tips to help you practice in your home studio with confidence.
- Practice
When it comes to dancing on stage or on certain floors, it is important to get a feel for it first. Try a few first positions jumps or relevés – this will help your confidence when it comes time to dance full out.
- Hairspray
Hairspray is a quick and easy fix for dancers. All you have to do is spray the bottom of your dance shoes with hairspray and you will be ready to go.
- Water or a Damp Towel
Another easy solution is to use a little bit of water on the bottom of your shoes. You can also keep a damp towel nearby and rub the bottom of your shoes as needed. Remember that you do not need to use a lot of water -a little goes a long way.
- Buy Your Own Rosin
If you find that the methods mentioned above are not successful, you can buy your own supply of rosin. Most dance stores will carry rosin; however, you do have the option of shopping online as well. Keep in mind that rosin should never be touched with bare hands or feet – it is for the bottom of your dance shoes only. Rosin will increase the friction between your shoe and the floor. It is most often used on wood floors but can also be used in studio or on stage.
Because of the pandemic, you may have found yourself looking at options to turn a space into a home dance studio. Marley Floors are the best floors for ballet and contemporary dance – exactly what you will need to keep up with your Alberta Ballet School classes! Marley Flooring is used in studios and professional ballet schools around the world. They are vinyl dance floors that provide a safe, controlled surface with the right amount of grip and resistance.
Installation can either be permanent, semi-permanent, or temporary. If installing by yourself, simply lay the rolls flat using vinyl tape along the seams. We always recommend checking the product and manufacturer’s specifications and following the directions of your installation very carefully.
They are easy to clean and exceptionally durable. A quick sweep followed by a dry mop will keep the floor ready to dance. Wash your Marley flooring once a week with a detergent degreaser. We always suggest using dance flooring friendly products recommended by the flooring manufacturer!
For more information, do not hesitate to reach out to us at the Alberta Ballet School. We love being your resources as you ensure you can keep dancing at home – or in-studio.
