Air Fryer Sweet Potato Wedges

You probably want to know what the story is behind these air fryer sweet potato wedges.

After all, us Milner’s have been air frying for a decade and you probably want to know when we started this air fryer trend.

Well, before we got hooked on sweet potato wedges in the air fryer, it would have started with our crispy air fryer potato wedges that are made with white potatoes.

Always made with extra virgin olive oil and tossed in cajun seasoning.

Something that we have cooked for such a long time and just makes that great side dish for dinner.

Usually in the Milner house we will have a dining table full of help yourself food. Such as instant pot frozen chicken wings, instant pot frozen ribs and usually a cob salad too.

Though there will be an argument over who gets the last of the potato wedges.

Out of all the air fryer potatoes, Dominic will always mention how the potato wedges are his favourite and ask me to make them for a Saturday night supper.

So, when we started Recipe This back in late 2015, the first recipe we ever published was our potato wedges. Though they have been updated a few times since then.

Air fryer sweet potato wedges is just a variation of our favourite white potato wedges. For those times when we have sweet potatoes in the pantry and just fancy a change. Just as yummy and perfect if you follow Paleo and want a lower carb alternative.

Can You Eat The Skin On Sweet Potato Wedges?

Absolutely! Just like a white potato the skin on a sweet potato can also be eaten. Sweet potato skin tastes good, though doesn’t get as crispy as white potato skin.

Though, don’t let that put you off as sweet potato skin is still yummy and I would recommend making skin on sweet potato wedges.

Why Are My Sweet Potato Wedges Not Crispy?

This is because the skin is lacking oil and it is preventing the sweet potatoes from becoming crispy.

You can solve this problem with a spray bottle. Fill a spray bottle with extra virgin olive oil and then spray some of the oil over the sweet potato wedges.

Just do this for the last 3 minutes of cooking if you feel the sweet potato wedges are not crispy enough.

Seasoned Potato Wedges In Air Fryer

Another way to improve on how crispy your sweet potato wedges are is to season them before cooking.

Then your sweet potato wedges will be similar to the delicious potato wedges that you get to buy at KFC.

What you do is load your sweet potato wedges into a bowl with your oil and seasonings and rub the seasoning into the potatoes.

It then sticks to the potatoes as they cook, and you have that wonderfully crispy breading texture to your potato wedges once they have been cooked in the air fryer.

Notes

Seasonings. You can mix and match your seasonings depending on what you are serving with your sweet potato wedges. We will usually use cajun and paprika so that we have sweet potato wedges that are similar to KFC. But you can use whatever you like.

Shake. I recommend you shake the wedges when you change the cooking temperature. This is because the sweet potato wedges can stick together, and it will stop them from getting crispy.

FAQs

Why soak sweet potatoes before air frying? ›

If you'd like, you can soak the sweet potato slices for 30 minutes up to 2 hours before frying to remove excess starch. Personally, though, going through this step didn't make a real difference for my fries. Peels on or off — it's up to you!

Why are my sweet potatoes not crispy in air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are turning out soggy it is likely because you are over-crowding your air fryer basket or using too much oil. For the best results, use just ½ Tablespoon of oil per sweet potato and cook your fries in a single layer so that the air has room to circulate.

Why are my sweet potato wedges not crispy? ›

Don't overcrowd the baking sheet!

This is an important one! If the baking sheet it too crowded, the sweet potatoes will not crisp.

Why are sweet potatoes soggy in air fryer? ›

If your air fryer fries are soggy, it is likely because you over-crowded them in the basket. The sweet potatoes steam when crowded together, instead of air frying. For the best, most crispy results, cook the fries in a single layer so that the air has room to circulate.

What happens if you don't soak potatoes before air frying? ›

I wouldn't bother doing potatoes from the raw state, without soaking. It will take about a half an hour and the texture won't be nearly as rewarding. They just don't get very crispy without that cold soak.

Why do you put oil on sweet potatoes before baking? ›

If I'm planning to, I rub the sweet potatoes in a small amount of olive oil before baking to crisp them up and add extra flavor. After baking, let the potatoes cool slightly, split the tops open, and dot with butter that will melt from the residual heat. Season with a little salt and pepper, and you're ready to go.

Why do sweet potatoes turn black in air fryer? ›

Why do my air fryer sweet potato fries turn black? Sweet potatoes contain a higher concentration of sugar than standard potatoes, and caramelize as they cook in the air fryer. If you find the fries are darkening too quickly or deeply, cook at a lower temperature, or for a shorter period of time.

How much heat and time should you put a sweet potato in an air fryer? ›

Season: Leave a bit of water on the potatoes from rinsing so the salt sticks, and sprinkle about ½ teaspoon of salt on each. If using, drizzle with olive oil. Place the potatoes in the air fryer basket. Air Fry: Set the air fryer to 390°F and air fry for about 30 minutes, or until the potatoes are fork tender.

Are sweet potato wedges healthy? ›

Being a rich source of potassium, sweet potatoes help promote a healthy heart. Higher potassium intake helps manage sodium levels and as a result promotes healthier blood pressure, which may reduce your risk of heart disease.

Can you eat the skin on sweet potato wedges? ›

Sweet potato skins are safe to eat and can be easily added to most recipes. They're rich in fiber, other nutrients, and antioxidants that can help support a healthy gut, increase feelings of fullness, and prevent chronic disease. If you're looking to get the most nutrition out of your sweet potato, keep the peel on.

Why are my sweet potatoes not crispy in the air fryer? ›

Water on your potatoes will keep them from getting crispy and they will just steam. Step 4: Toss with cornstarch first, then oil and seasonings. The cornstarch is another big component to crispy sweet potato fries in the air fryer and in the oven.

Can you put foil in an air fryer? ›

Foil is safe to use in an air fryer so long as you follow three basic rules: never let foil touch the heating element; make sure the foil is weighted so it doesn't blow around the basket; and avoid contact with acidic ingredients, which can cause the foil to leach onto your food.

Why are my sweet potato fries burning in air fryer? ›

This can be caused by either overcrowding the air fryer basket or adding too much oil to the fries. I recommend cooking the sweet potato fries in a single layer at the bottom of the basket to allow the air to properly circulate and cook the fries. I also recommend not adding more than 1 teaspoon of oil to the fries.

Should you soak sweet potatoes before cooking? ›

Some recipes for homemade sweet potato fries ask you to soak the fries before cooking. The theory is that soaking draws out starch from inside the potatoes, helping them crisp up. I've tested soaking sweet potato fries many times, and I've found that it doesn't make them much crispier, if at all.

Why is it important to soak potatoes before frying? ›

The main reasons to cut the potatoes and pre-soak in water are: To allow the excess starches and sugars to be removed from the outer surface of the fry strips AND to keep the potatoes from browning prematurely from exposure to air. Covering in water helps the potato from turning a dark color.

How long does a sweet potato take in an air fryer? ›

Add salt, cayenne pepper, ginger, and sugar or any combination of these spices; stir to combine. Place sweet potatoes in the air fryer in a single layer. Air-fry for 10 to 12 minutes, stirring or shaking sweet potatoes halfway through the air frying time. Serve warm.
