King Charles has been feeling "thoroughly irritated" by his cancer diagnosis because of the impact treatment has had on his agenda, a royal expert suggested.

The King started receiving treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer within days of the Palace announcing his diagnosis to the public in February.

He was forced to take a step back from his public-facing duties and only returned to a reduced schedule last month.

But former BBC correspondent Jennie Bond suggested His Majesty is likely "cross" his ill health got in the way of his plans.

Bond said: "I think he's thoroughly irritated by what's happened. To be stopped in your tracks, as he has been, after 18 months or so on the throne was deeply frustrating for him.

"Also, it was a great shock, it is a great shock to be told you have cancer - but he is a man not exactly with a mission but in a bit of a hurry to get all the things he'd been thinking about during his reign [done].

"We know he gets irritated, let's think back to the pen, when pens don't work he gets cross. And I think he's been thoroughly cross by the fact his engagements have been stopped and are now somewhat curtailed."

The King last month said he was "greatly encouraged" by doctors allowing him to resume some of his public duties after initial cancer treatment.

But the royal commentator noted Queen Camilla didn't seem to share his enthusiasm – noting she has repeatedly urged him to slow down.

Speaking to Times Radio, she said: "It's rather comical images behind the scenes, Camilla saying, 'For goodness's sake, Charles!'

"She was at a garden party and she was asked how he was doing. She said, 'He would be doing well if he would just behave himself'."

She added: "We're told he's like a caged lion, trying to get out and do more, and he's doing a lot.
